INCREDIBLY ORIGINAL.
Forget creepy pasta. The stories are well above the caliber of anything you can find there. Each successive story just gets better and better. This author is definitely going places and I'm looking forward to more stories and hopefully a very long novel. Very unique voice.
CHILlING PAGE TURNER.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I couldn’t put it down and the descriptions were so detailed. I felt as if I was in the book. Waiting and hoping for the next book to come out!

BITtERSWEET AND LOVELY!
My only complaint was that it ended.
River's words made me smile, ache, cry and hope. It was as if a piece of her soul wrapped around my psyche until I could experience her book with all five senses somehow. Absolutely loved it and am so happy to add it to my collection.

A WILD RIDE
I was looking for the longest time, for a book to read. I had readers block and nothing grabbed me. This book, this wonderful, amazing book, had me at hello. The characters were fresh, sometimes funny, sometimes scary, but easy to fall in love with. The story took me for a wild ride and I loved every minute of it. Now I can’t wait for the next installment!

WHEW, THAT WAS A RUSH
Whew, that was a rush. This book juggles a lot of things. Lots of characters, lots of storylines, lots of worldbuilding and descriptions. It's not exactly effortless, at least as far as readers receive it and interact with it, but it is constructed in such a way that they, or maybe just me, are drawn into the story and want to discover all the connections and dependencies that define the world and relationships that drive the story forward. What is there to discover? A rich mythological tapestry teeming with wonder, magic, vivid descriptions, vibrant and imaginative places, and character-driven drama intermixed with very relatable and sympathetic figures. Oli and Xander are great protagonists in their own right, their friends, while initially having a more troubling aura surrounding them, eventually grow into relatable and engaging figures in their own right, and exploring their connections to the Shadow Queen and world beyond our own, as well as the backstories of every other figure we get into, was absolutely a blast. I very much look forward to the ways the author will build upon her worlds and plots moving forward.
PHENOMENAL
Fantasy is not my normal genre of reading, but hearing River speak of the book and explain it on Twitter was something that got me intrigued. When River requested a read for a review, I jumped on the chance.
Into The Forgotten Forest is part one of the Outcrossed Series and when I reached the end, I wished I had the remainder to read right away!
What I loved most was the way she presented the main characters Olexa and Olexander (Twins). You get a sense of who they are as individuals and how the bond between them is as twins. She made then relatable, real, and throughout the book they have character progression. Other character’s show up and each are presented in a way that leads to understanding of the world and plot she has in mind.
The world she is building is another positive, because her ability to detail scenes and make you feel as if you are in that world is phenomenal. I feel like I am standing in this fictional world. That is very important when we don’t have a visual like in movies.
I honestly cannot think of something I disliked, other than not having the remainder of the series! I would recommend to anyone truly.

"Under The Wolf Moon" Howls
The opening chapter of the 2024 update to Under The Wolf Moon starts things off at a run. Presumably, it is beginning at the end point of the first in the series. While this means it is a good idea to read the first one beforehand it is not necessarily a full-on requirement. There are enough familiar elements for those who like the fantasy genre to easily find some common ground to land themselves on. Nevertheless, the formation of the opening does make it a tad hard to get a handle on the plot when starting with this one first. Yet, this puzzle aspect to reading it out of order can increase the fun for those who want a little more mystery to first time reading experiences.
Providing the location and character who is the point-of-view are key features of this book. Meaning that even if one is not familiar with the characters one always knows where the location is and whose perspective it is.
There are still some small typos in this update (at least in the review copy). However, the few obvious ones are only slightly jarring.
There are various pop culture and mythological references in this story. They range from television shows and movies to supernatural creatures of various folklore. This range of references helps balance the mixture of realism and fantasy. Not to mention this range also assists with allowing for a large amount of different characters since some may know one type of reference while others may not. It is also worth mentioning that the characters never seem to act in stereotypical surprise about not getting a reference.
The pacing of the story may seem arguably breakneck. Yet, it is really no different in pace than a movie part of the Star Wars franchise due to doing the transitions in the same type of way (Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back [1980]).

BIO
River J. Hopkins, bestselling author of SOMETIME AFTER MIDNIGHT: A COLLECTION OF POETRY & SHORT STORIES, isn't just a writer; she's also a musician, an artist, a gamer, a poet, and a cyborg. The stories she writes are usually a mixture of genres, including fantasy, paranormal, horror, adventure, and science fiction. She writes for new adult—that weird stage between being a young adult, and full-on adulting—and adult audiences.
Ever since she can remember, River has been fascinated with mythology, lore, and legends. For the past decade, she has researched and dreamed and worked harder than she ever thought possible to begin piecing together a rich world full of magic, and twists on some stories you thought you knew. INTO THE FORGOTTEN FOREST is just the first book in what promises to be an ever expanding fictional universe.
